Youth Jobs PaTH is a new internship program designed to provide work experience and skill development opportunities to young people aged 17 – 24. The program offers businesses the opportunity to trial a job seeker in an internship placement and assess their capabilities and suitability for ongoing employment.
The internship allows job seekers to demonstrate their capabilities, develop skills and improve their future employment opportunities.
Youth Jobs PaTH have three stages: Prepare, Trial, Hire
Prepare – Eligible job seekers are linked with our Employment Services for 6+ months of Employment Assistance. During this time our Employment Consultants work with job seekers to access training, volunteering or work experience to gain valuable skills and knowledge.
Trial – Businesses can trial an eligible job seeker in an internship for between 4 and 12 weeks, with hours ranging between 30 and 50 hours a fortnight. All businesses who host an internship receive an upfront, incentive payment of $1,000 and the intern is covered by insurance, all purchased by the Australian Government. As interns are unpaid by the business, interns will receive a Government paid, $200 fortnightly incentive payment additional to their regular Government income support. To be eligible to host an internship, businesses must have a position vacancy or frequent recruitment periods, and have the intention to hire the job seeker should they be found suitable from the trial.
Hire – Businesses who then hire the job seeker after the internship period can access wage subsidy incentive payments to help contribute to the costs of hiring and training.
What are the associated costs?
Interns are unpaid however will receive their usual Government income support with a fortnightly $200 supplement for the duration of the internship. Host businesses will receive an upfront incentive payment of $1,000 to help cover any costs for hosting the intern.
