With support from his Community Support Officer (CSO) Bianca, Andrew started an exciting new work placement at his local Bunnings. He also assisted with an event at the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, which has helped him develop confidence in public speaking!
Bianca shares the details and opportunities that have since opened up for Andrew.
Building towards employment
Andrew joined us in April 2017 with a goal to gain work experience. Through his NDIS plan he aims to find paid employment and also boost his social skills, independence, and ability to work with others.
He started off with work experience at Packaging & Warehousing Bibra Lake, where he developed basic workplace skills and knowledge. From there he wanted to expand his experience in a range of settings. This would help him identify what work he’d like to do in the future.
Soon enough, an opportunity in the nursery area at Bunnings Cannington opened up. This role is big step up for him, as Andrew has new responsibilities in making sure tasks are completed correctly.
- watering plants
- pricing items
- keeping the area neat and tidy
Andrew started work in April and goes in every Tuesday for two hours at a time. So far he’s doing an incredible job and is learning fast with the direction of the Bunnings supervisor. He works well in the team and is quickly growing in confidence around others.
I’m happy to say that the staff are very pleased with his work so far!
A puppeteers’ dream
Along with getting hands-on work experience, Andrew is also pursuing his interests within the community.
He loves puppets and is a big fan of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Fremantle. Together we enquired about any small jobs he could assist with. The staff were so impressed by Andrew’s knowledge and enthusiasm that they invited him to deliver a speech during a special afternoon tea event!
Despite a nervous start Andrew did an incredible job speaking to a crowd. There’s no doubt he was thrilled to be involved and share his love of puppets!
And as a result of his success, he was offered an opportunity to volunteer as an usher for the upcoming school holidays. Congratulations Andrew, your hard work and dedication have paid off!
