Beau trains to become a barista

Following from our last article about our latest Customised Employment program (CEP), we share how one of our participants, Beau, is building his new career.

A new beginning

Beau is a hardworking fellow. Prior to joining us he worked in a gardening role and as a trolley collector at his local Woolworths. However when things changed and work was no longer available, Beau decided to get support to find a new employment pathway. This is when he and his mum met our team.

One of our customer managers helped Beau identify his goals for work and the support he needed to achieve them. He then registered with the NDIS and now has the funding he needs.

On board with Customised Employment

With a goal to find a new career Beau decided to try a different approach with one-on-one employment support. Together with his support worker Zoe he’s been exploring different work options and building key skills for the workplace.

When our Customised Employment program came up in July, it was a great chance for Beau to further expand his work knowledge and skills. During the program attendees do work placements at various locations that they’re interested in. This includes experiences in retail, hospitality, or childcare that led to ongoing work placements or employment.

One of the workplace visits was to Mandurah Barista Training, where Beau and three others learned what being a barista is all about. He had such a great time and now hopes to find work experience at a café.

Further study

To help him become a barista, we supported Beau to access funding to complete a Certificate III in Hospitality at Mandurah Barista Training. The course runs three days a week and finishes at the end of the year – so far, Beau is loving it!

It’s been fantastic to see him so motivated and excited to pursue an exciting new pathway. Best of luck Beau and keep up the great work!
