Our Workpower team all have a story of their own: like why they chose an industry that changes people’s lives and why they love Workpower. Deb our Balcatta Recycling Shop Team Leader is one of these remarkable people, and she shares how she found a fulfilling career with Workpower.
Deb was a retail manager for 12 years and her life was coasting along. It wasn’t until a close family member experienced a mental health crisis that she realised life was too short to not work in a more fulfilling role.
Wanting to help change people’s lives, Debra found a role at Workpower. Now she could work closely with people with disability and their families.
A new career with Workpower
“Something inside of me decided that I didn’t feel worthwhile doing the job I was doing and if I could change my career and do this and help somebody else, help another family, then that was what I was going to do,” said Deb.
Deb’s lack of mental health awareness at the time is what drives her ethos in how she supports and manages her team at the Balcatta Recycling Shop.
“Any of the people working here, including our supported employees, can come speak to me and it goes no further, and hopefully I can help,” said Deb.
“I find that some people will maybe be more willing to talk to me more than their own family. I find it important to be there for people.”

Deb knows that sharing her story can help other people going through similar circumstances.
“I like to think speaking about what happened in my life helps others. I like to think that I can sit and listen to people and listen to their problems,” explained Deb.
Deb’s ability to listen is one of her many strengths. As Team Leader, she supports our team of seven to engage with customers, manage the shop, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
Workpower’s support network runs deep. Know someone with a disability who would benefit from an employment opportunity that offers the kind of support Deb provides? Then give us a call on 1800 610 665 or email us today.
