There’s no better way to welcome a brand new year than with the School Holiday Program. Just like our friends in Perth, our South West SHP attendees had a blast with a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Together we explored nature, rode on a pirate ship, and did outdoor science experiments, to name a few!
SHP Team Leader Vyanjana shares more details on what the group got up to over the summer holidays.
Enjoying nature and the outdoors
Our January program included lots of engaging activities for children and young people with disability.
A particular highlight was visiting River Wren Rescue, a treatment and rehabilitation centre for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. We assisted staff to feed the animals and do some housekeeping duties. Attendees also made bird feeders with juicy fruits and seeds for the animals to enjoy.
One child really enjoyed interacting with a friendly cockatoo, who said ‘hello’ and nodded to him. This experience brought the biggest smile to his face.
Our pirate adventure day started with fun nautical themed arts and craft held at our centre. Attendees were dressed up as pirates for our ride on the pirate cruise around Mandurah’s waterways.
It was a wonderful experience! We even spotted some playful dolphins and a newborn calf swimming with its mother.
And what School Holiday Program is complete without a cricket day out. Everyone got involved and had a go in activities organised by a local club of the Peel Cricket Association. We also played disc golf for the first time and relaxed with a picnic at the park.
Part of the family
We had a seven year old join us for the first time on SHP. As soon as he walked through the doors he was right at home, and fully participated in every activity we did. It was clear to see that he really enjoyed being part of a group and socialising with others.
After the program finished we received feedback from his grandmother who said that he was always so happy after the end of each session. Like others, he’s keen to join us for our next School Holiday Program!
We’re very grateful to hear such lovely feedback from customers, and cannot wait for another two weeks of jam-packed fun in April.
