Hello 2021! What better way to start off a new year then with our fun-filled School Holiday Program.
We catch up with SHP Team Leader Vyanjana to see what exciting activities attendees took part in over the summer holiday.
The January SHP was filled with many fantastic activities and outings that kept everyone engaged.
Day 1 began with introductions, followed by a series of in-house interactive games. These activities were designed to help attendees identify their interests, strengths, and weaknesses. This then allows them think of goals they would like to achieve in the future.

Another highlight of this program was visiting Kent Weir Park. The group wandered around spotting native ducks and birds, and discovered bat houses and other animals.
As always, attendees loved the cricket activity held by WACA. We had plenty of fun in the sun and learned some new tricks on the field. We also took a ride on a cute miniature train at the Castledare Miniature Railway.
There was plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, and with such lovely weather we made the most of our time.
Our program included a number of friendship group activities. Attendees and their support workers formed groups with others to do an activity they were interested in. This ranged from playing board games, cooking, or making art.
It was during these group activities that I noticed attendees come out of their shells and connect with others. One of the boys was initially quiet and shy as it was his first time at SHP. But after watching others interact and joining a storytelling activity he grew closer to another boy.
After two weeks the pair were always together, and when it came time to say goodbye they asked their parents when they would next be able to see one another. This was a huge milestone for both boys as they had limited social connection with others.
At the end of the day, this is what the School Holiday Program is all about. Making friends, learning skills, and exploring something new about yourself and your interests. Better yet, it’s all achieved while enjoying yourself in a safe and supportive environment.
SHP also featured work sampling activities targeted at older attendees, which we’ll talk about in our next article.
