You might recognise Franco and his infectious smile from the front gate at Balcatta Recycling Centre – well, that smile doubles in size when he is driving the forklift.
After a typical morning guiding visitors to the appropriate waste and recycling stations or supervising the steel drop-off point, Franco’s fun really begins with his turn in the forklift.
“My favourite part of the job is definitely forklift driving. They have trouble getting me out of it. I love that kind of job,” said Franco.
“Mostly I move pallets around but sometimes metal, if someone has a long piece of gutter on their ute, we’ll help lift that too.”
Having achieved his forklift licence through Workpower during his stint at its Osborne Park warehouse, Franco has now set his eye on some of the larger vehicles that roam the Balcatta Recycling Centre.
“I’m a person that loves machinery. Because I’m an amputee, I can’t really carry stuff with my hands, but with machinery it’s all good,” added Franco
“There are still things I’d like to do; I’d like to drive a truck. We’ve got a cardboard truck; I’d like to get my licence for that at one stage if I could. We’ve got an excavator – another big machine.”
“Nothing can stop you from doing what you’d love to achieve.”

Along with his forklift licence, Franco has taken full advantage of Workpower’s support for career progression and training, taking a Nationwide Training warehouse course at Osborne Park along with first aid, safety and of course forklift training.
“Workpower is a great organisation, it’s been great for me. I’ve learned a lot of skills. I’ve grown into the company.”
“It’s made me more confident. I just love the people, it’s like a big family. We look after each other.”
