Over the four days the team put together the best in career advice talks, one-on-one employability workshops, and job search sessions. Each person also got to try real work experience in an area of their choice. Here’s what they got up to.
Preparing for employment
Each week began with a workshop day where we focused on setting goals and building work skills. Shirley from Job and Skills WA shared with us what supports are available for job seekers and how to search and apply for jobs.
From there we moved onto one-on-one employment sessions. Our experienced team worked with each attendant through the discovery process. This helps them identify their skills and interests, set goals, and put together a plan to achieve it. Here’s more about customised employment and how it works.
The process is different for everyone, and we work closely with each person to find what suits them. Some got straight into it and spent most sessions gaining firsthand experience or applying for work. Great to see such strong enthusiasm!
Hands on industry experience
Our job seekers had the chance to try work placements across various industries. Here’s a few highlights from those who visited our social enterprises:
- Alex joined the crew at Belmont Packaging & Warehousing
- Tristan tried out both the Balcatta Recycling Shop and Belmont workplaces
- Dean Lucas assisted the production team at Fire & Electrical Services in Mandurah
- Gloria helped our HR team with admin tasks at the Corporate Office
Everyone learned about the workplace, assisted with real contracts and tasks, and worked in a team. These are key experiences that help them identify goals and aspirations for the future.
To finish off a great day, yoga business entrepreneur Kat Chivers shared with the group her journey with Workpower. Kat discussed how she built her own micro-enterprise and applied for grants to develop her business with our support.
She ended each session with some relaxing yoga – a well earned rest after all that hard work!
This SHEP saw plenty of great outcomes for our job seekers, who left with new employment skills and valuable experience under their belt. Great work everyone! And a big thank you to all our visitors for helping our job seekers out.
Later on we’ll share what each person learned during their industry experience and the progress they’ve made since then.
