How to jump-start your first career

How to jump-start your first career

If you feel lost or unsure of what to do once school finishes, don’t worry you’re not alone. It can be a confusing time if you don’t know what you want to achieve or don’t know the options available.

But the good news is we’ve worked with many young people with disability looking to take the next step. Whether it’s work experience or paid employment, we can help you get on track! Our School Holiday Employment Program (SHEP) helps you focus in on your employment goals, learn new skills, and experience work firsthand in a custom work placement.

During the program we support you to work through a number of activities. By trying these things you’ll be on your way towards your first career.

Set goals

It’s hard to make progress without a goal. So to get started, you should consider:

  • Your interests and skills
  • Things you’d like to achieve or develop
  • Areas of work you want to explore

This will help your set specific goals that you can start working towards. We cover this in our Discovery process, followed by an action plan which maps the steps to take towards your goals.

Get advice from professionals

Kat chats about setting up her own business, applying for grants, and growing her business network.

If you’re unsure what options are available then it helps to get advice. Ask someone working in the industry you’re interested in to tell you about the workplace and what’s involved.

In our last program Shirley from Job Skills WA shared helpful information about different employment pathways and how to apply. We also had yoga entrepreneur Kat tells us about her micro-business and Customised Employment journey.

And not to mention our Employment team hold years of experience and are here to help

Do work experience

Once you’ve set your goals and learned about the workplace, you can take the next step and try it yourself. Work experience is a great way to get hands on and learn the tasks involved. You will also meet new people in the process.

Placements can be hard to find alone, which is why we work with the local community to offer industry placements as part of SHEP. These are invaluable opportunities that have led to paid positions at Best&Less and Optus Stadium
