So much has happened in 2018, it would be impossible to include everything. But here are some of the highlights from a very successful Workpower year!
A new community hub
After years of development we started 2018 with the opening of our Whittome Community Garden Centre. With the support of the City of Swan and Lotterywest, the facility operates as a safe space for learning, recovery, and connecting with nature.
Open to people with disability, mental illness, and community members alike, we currently run a range of art, gardening, and cooking classes from the centre. Visitors can contribute to the communal garden and local artists are welcome to work on their projects in the space.
The opening was a great success, and we have new programs on offer starting next year. Contact us for further details!
A new way to work
In June we launched a new innovative approach to employment. Customised Employment is a holistic approach to finding work that suits you. It involves a two-step process that begins with getting to know you and your dreams and aspirations.
Secondly, we find opportunities in the community that match your interests – whether it’s work experience, volunteering, or starting a micro-business!
Our program is your first step towards transitioning from school into the workplace. Don’t miss our specialised workshops held this month!
Celebrating social procurement
We had the privilege to host the annual WADE Celebration for 2018 in October. Over 200 notable guests from the public and the private sector join us.
We were grateful to have the Minister for Disability Services Hon Stephen Dawson co-present the Outstanding Social Procurement awards with our CEO Lee Broomhall. These awards represent the strong partnerships developed between our social enterprises and the public and private sector.
Not only did we achieve $50 million in new business, but exceeded the target to create 2,500 valued jobs by 2018! A massive thank you to our customers, supporters, and partners that made this achievement possible.
And to finish off, we were recognised with dual Infinity awards for overall Waste Initiative of the Year and Waste Team of the Year in November! Our Balcatta Recycling Shop team took home these awards for their commitment to sustainability and helping others to recycle. Congratulations team!
