We were delighted to have 25 attendees to our Perth School Holiday Program at the start of this month. With the sun out our group tried a range of new activities in the community and had a blast! Here’s what they got up to.
Building new experiences
All our SHP attendees had a go at trying different indoor and outdoor activities. These include:
- Outdoor cricket games
- Fishing with Fishability
- Bowling and drumming fun
- Laser tag out with both programs
Friendship groups are a new addition to SHP, and so far it’s a big hit with participants who prefer small groups. Over the two weeks we held two sessions where participants shared their common interests and hobbies.
This is a terrific way to form relationships, develop skills, and build confidence while being part of a supportive group.
Working towards employment
For our older children we designed a series of activities and experiences to prepare them for work in the future.
One of them was to assist staff at the Canning Districts Historical Society at the Woodloes Homestead. This heritage-listed building was built in 1871 and is one of the oldest buildings in the Swan River Colony.
The group got their hands dirty and helped to clean and polish the historical artefacts whilst learning about our colonial history. The staff greatly appreciated the assistance.
We then visited the Balcatta Recycling Shop. Team Leader Debra showed us how they recycle goods and the different jobs employees do. These experiences gave attendees valuable insight into the world of employment and the different opportunities available to them.
Great feedback from families
Every school holiday we welcome feedback and suggestions from families on what they liked about the program and how we can improve.
A participant’s mother expressed her thanks to the team for designing another engaging program of supports.
“Aanyah has taken to your School Holiday Program so well. She’s enjoying it a lot and it’s also contributing towards her personal development,” says Jessy.
“Well done Sara and team! Keep your high spirits going. You guys doing an awesome job.”
We also heard from Emma, another participant’s mother, who was satisfied by our tailored and flexible approach.
“Just wanted to say thanks again for having Jade in the program this school holidays and accommodating for her needs accordingly,” says Emma.
Thank you for your support and feedback! We are always looking to find new ways to engage, challenge, and excite in each program.
