Taking the first step towards your career goals

Taking the first step towards your career goals

We’re not far from the end of the year now, and for many this means getting ready for a job after school. But regardless if you’re starting work for the first time, changing jobs, or looking for experience, the road to employment isn’t always easy to navigate without support.

That’s where our School Holiday Employment Program (SHEP) comes in.

Setting up for success

A big group of jobseekers from different backgrounds joined us for day one at our Cannington office at the start of this month. One of our People Services Managers Eoin welcomed them with an intro to Customised Employment and the Discovery Process. He shared how previous SHEP attendees used supports to pursue their unique work goals.

This includes helping JB complete an admin work at the corporate office, and supporting school graduates to score paid hospitality positions at Optus Stadium.

Eoin explained how the Discovery and Job Creation process helps job seekers set goals and find opportunities for experience in the community.

Your dream career

Natalie from the People Services team then went through different employment activities like:

  • A dream career brainstorm session
  • Job analysis and mock interviews
  • Discussion about what’s important when choosing jobs

She also talked about the multiple career pathways available and urged each person to dream big. Finding opportunities to suit your unique interests and skills is what Customised Employment is all about!

Everyone completed their own Discovery Process ahead of the tailored work placement they started the next day. This includes work experience at our commercial businesses as well as Chaos Pop Culture and Foxdale Riding School. We’ll share how everyone’s placement went shortly so watch this space!

Michael helps out at the new comic book store Chaos Pop Culture in Cannington!
