This year we opened up a range of new opportunities for people with disability to build new skills at the Balcatta Recycling Shop. So far we’ve got seven new team members and are expecting more in the next few weeks.
Here are some of the daily tasks our team members help out with:
Working at recycling bays
As a public recycling facility we recycle metal, plastics, glass, cardboard, and more in various forms. Visitors come to drop off their glassware or steel cans at each recycling bay, which is supervised by a team member at all times.
Employees help visitors unload their vehicles and drop off items at each bay. One of our newest team members Chris is a natural with physical tasks and excels at loading the cardboard bailer. He also works well in maintaining the bricks and tiles in the landscape area.
We accept electronics and devices which need to be sorted and placed in the right areas. Team members Colin and Elliot help cut off cord ends for processing.
Maintaining shop items
With such a range of secondhand items available, our employees take turns to manage different areas and ensure everything is well maintained.
Michael, James, Elliot, and Colin all help with:
- Sorting items in the electronics area by function and price
- Categorising books, DVDs, CDs, and games in the entertainment area
- Moving stock from the drop off bay to the shop or landscape areas
We also have a thriving garden area with a range of plants, trees, and garden equipment available. James always makes sure plants are well watered and pruned, and the area kept tidy at all times.
Teamwork plays an important role while working at the BRS, but it’s made easier when you’ve got a friendly, supportive team to welcome you in. Many of our employees really value the relationships and skills they’ve developed while at work. You can read their stories here and here.
We offer flexible opportunities for employment and work experience across all our social enterprises, which can help you build the skills you want towards your career.
