Workpower Presents: Tenacious Tom

Crafting with precision and skill is Tom’s daily forte.

Employed at Workpower Rockingham, Tom dedicates his expertise to manufacturing top-notch timber products for various industries. Although a relative newcomer with just three years under his belt, Tom has swiftly evolved into the cornerstone of the timber team, leaving an indelible mark on his craft.

“There’s nothing that I can’t do. I wish I wasn’t so good at everything!” Tom laughed as we began our chat about his time at Workpower.

“When I left school, I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do, but I was certain I didn’t want to be sat at a desk.”

Tom had a passion for craftsmanship, which led him to Workpower. When asked about this passion, Tom credited his upbringing around construction and his dad’s influence as a builder.

Before Workpower, Tom worked at a retail shop and reflecting on the difference in roles, he noted,

“Workpower is more understanding than open employment. Here, I am treated with a lot more respect.”

While considering a potential return to open employment, he appreciated the flexibility at Workpower, stating, “Workpower allows me to move at my own pace and works with me, not against me.”

Highlighting the positive aspects of Workpower, Tom emphasised its suitability for individuals with disabilities. Proudly equipped with a forklift ticket, white card, and driver’s license, he showcased the diverse skill set nurtured within the organisation.

Tom’s proficiency extends to loading trucks, cutting timber, and maintaining equipment, all while taking pride in the finished product. His advice to those with disabilities seeking employment resonates with honesty and self-awareness. “Be upfront, honest, be yourself, and do the best you can!” Tom urged, emphasising the importance of acknowledging strengths and weaknesses.

Beyond the tools, Tom actively contributes to the workplace by joining Rockingham’s safety committee. When he is busy crafting, he takes a lot of pride in the quality of the finished product.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re making something as simple as a pallet. Taking pride in your work is very important to me.”

Tom’s commitment to quality and workplace safety shines through, whether on or off the tools, showcasing him as a true asset to the Workpower Rockingham team.
