Blake’s visit to WA Police Academy

Blake is Workpower Nursery’s very own Special Olympic swimming sensation who is making waves both in and out of the pool!

He recently had the chance to share his story with 60 police recruits at the WA Police Academy in Joondalup, advocating for the WA Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) and Special Olympics WA.

What is LETR?

The WA Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a global initiative, led by law enforcement employees. They raise awareness for individuals with intellectual disabilities through support for Special Olympics programs and fundraising events. With over 1.9 million athletes across 35 countries, the LETR plays a vital role in promoting respect, inclusion, and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport.

“They light the Special Olympic Torch which is called ‘The Flame of Hope’ and they run with it. It happens everywhere whenever the competitions are on.” Blake explained.

Inspired by his father, Rick Veaney, who is a retired Police Sergeant and a respected member of LETR, Blake continues to champion for the LETR cause.

“My dad was with the police for 43 years, he got involved in LETR when I was 8 years old,” Blake said."

Rick's dedication to LETR has not only inspired fellow officers but has also instilled a sense of purpose in Blake to make a difference in the community.

Blake’s speech left a lasting impression on his audience, inspiring new recruits to join the cause and support people with intellectual disabilities.

Looking ahead, Blake is gearing up for the 2024 LETR WA Polar Plunge, a national fundraising event supporting Special Olympics WA. As LETR continues to expand its reach across Australia, Blake eagerly anticipates the opportunity to participate and inspire others to join the movement.

“On the 3rd of August we will be going to the Polar Plunge and will be doing the torch that day too.”

To join Blake and LETR in making a difference, save the date for the 2024 Polar Plunge, and be a part of the movement to promote inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.
