Meet Workpower’s Support Coach, Peter!
“Helping find meaningful employment for our customers has always been special for me.”
We caught up with Support Coach, Peter, who with almost a decade of service under his belt, has recently won Workpower’s Golden Egg Awards.
The Golden Egg Awards is a peer-nominated program presented to Workpower’s Community Supports staff whose dedication and hard work have been recognised by their colleagues and customers.
He shared some of his highlights over the past nine and a half years and reflected on where his Workpower journey began.
Almost ten years later, Peter is supporting four different clients, each with their own unique journey and aspirations.
Peter had a diverse career background before he joined Workpower, having worked as an accountant and as a youth coordinator for a charitable organisation. His journey into support work stemmed from a desire for change and fulfillment.
"I studied accounting and IT at university, which led to my employment as an accountant, but while I was very good at it, I didn't particularly enjoy it. I also didn't like being stuck behind a desk, and ultimately, I didn't find the job fulfilling. I needed a change.”
Peter’s wife suggested for him to apply for a role in disability support, highlighting that he had really enjoyed his experience in youth and disability volunteer work.
“It was an easy choice. Workpower was the first and only place I applied for when I was looking for work in the disability sector.” Peter said.
When asked about the difference between Workpower and other providers, Peter explained, "Workpower has always been one of the leaders in the disability sector in WA. Workpower offers a very extensive and wide range of disability services, support, and employment opportunities, and covers and tailors for many aspects of an individual's life."
Peter’s favourite thing about his role is the variety that each day brings. He highlighted the joy of building trust and strong relationships with his clients and their families.
"I really enjoy helping our clients meet their personal dreams and employment goals. I also really like having fun, and I feel I'm good at making people feel comfortable and welcome."
For those aspiring to enter the disability support field, Peter advises, "Give it a go. It is one of the most wholesome and rewarding careers out there. Yes, there can be challenges along the way, but the sense of fulfillment you get from this role is unmatched."
