Workpower Celebrates Highly Commended Award at 2024 WasteSorted Awards

Workpower was awarded with Highly Commended at the prestigious 2024 WasteSorted Awards in the Waste Champion Team category.

Workpower’s dedication to providing employment opportunities for people with disability while promoting sustainable waste management practices has been acknowledged at a state level. The Highly Commended award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the thirty people who make up Workpower’s recycling team.

Workpower operates three Reuse Shops and recycling loops on behalf of local governments in Tamala Park, Balcatta, and Kalamunda, adding a fourth in Busselton by the end of 2024. Additionally, Workpower partners with various businesses to receive and process thousands of tonnes of recyclable materials annually, otherwise destined for landfill.

Workpower’s recycling mission is to maximise waste diversion from landfill, especially for hard-to-recycle materials, such as salon waste and fire extinguishers. As Workpower expands its recycling services and partnerships, so too does employment opportunities for people with disability.

Workpower's General Manager Recycling Services, James Wilson, with Chief Operating Officer, Shane O'Connor.

“Our recycling services have more than doubled in capacity and diversity, and we’re now taking what we’ve learned and our partnerships to our regional centres in Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, and the South West,” General Manager of Recycling James Wilson said.

“Workpower has many other services that our partners within the waste sector use. Our packaging and warehousing teams are assisting the City of Swan and City of Kalamunda with their FOGO waste bin rollouts, for example.

“We’ve managed to create interesting and diverse roles for people with disability within the circular economy. Our people are proud of the work they do, and they advocate sustainable waste practices to people within their communities.” James said.

“On behalf of the Workpower team, we congratulate the Denmark Tip Shop team for taking out the top award in our category, and we look forward to working with everyone in the sector to deliver on the State’s waste diversion strategy.”
